Good And Bad Cholesterol

We all know how cholesterol plays a very vital role in many functions of our body but are we concerned about "Good" and "Bad" cholesterol? The cholesterol itself can not dissolve in the blood but has to be moved to and from the cells by vectors called lipoproteins. There are two main lipoproteins that does this action and they are: Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and High-density lipoprotein (HDL).

Low-density lipoprotein or LDL is normally referred to as "Bad" cholesterol because when bad cholesterol flows in the blood, it can slowly but surely form a plaque which is a thick, hard material that gets deposited in the inner walls of the arteries causing it to become narrow and resulting in less blood flow to the heart and brain. This type of condition is very well known as "atherosclerosis". And if a clot is formed resulting in the narrowing of an artery, blocking the flow of blood to the heart, then a heart attack is sure to occur. Poor eating habits specially saturated fats, smoking, excess weight, stress and excessive alcohol consumption- all these factors leads to an increased cholesterol level of your body and therefore must be maintained in order to keep the body healthy and free of heart diseases.

High-density lipoprotein or HDL on the other hand is considered as the "Good" cholesterol because HDL takes the cholesterol in the blood back to the liver and away from the arteries giving you a strong protection against heart disease and strokes. The good cholesterol in your body is expelled by the liver and so many experts believe that as the excess cholesterol is removed from the arterial plaque, the buildup of fats in the inner walls is very slow which is very good for the heart. Good eating habits, weight loss and exercise are the three major factors that lower the cholesterol of your body.

Besides low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) there is one more form of fat that's made in the body and it's called Triglycerides. Everyone needs to be aware of this form of fat because cholesterol triglyceride gives you a variety of cardiovascular diseases. Cholesterol triglyceride is a lipid or a fat which is consumed by every body cell membrane structure and also in the brain. People having high triglycerides are often seen having a high total cholesterol level in their bodies including a high LDL (bad) level and a low HDL (good) cholesterol level. Many people with diabetes and heart disease also posses high triglyceride level.

Therefore it is strongly suggested that everyone should b very much concerned about the triglyceride level in their bodies as it is related to the heart disease and also other complications within your body. It is also recommended that by changing some of your diet habits, it is possible to have a lower triglyceride level. By doing regular exercise, eating less processed foods, less processed fats, the triglyceride lipids in your body can be lowered, kept in balance and controlled.
